Blood Angels Squad: High-Level Tabletop Visual Impact

An exploration of the painting process for an iconic Blood Angels unit, focusing on visual depth and cohesive squad aesthetics for the battlefield.

A high-level tabletop finish designed for the battlefield.

The challenge with an iconic army like the Blood Angels is not just painting them red, but making that red feel alive and authoritative on the battlefield. For this squad, we pushed our High-Level Tabletop standard to create miniatures that command attention.

This project is a perfect example of our Warhammer commission painting service, where we balance clean execution and thoughtful contrast to make the classic Space Marine silhouette truly stand out during gameplay.

The chromatic foundation for this unit is built on a selection of professional pigments aimed at preserving the brilliance of the red. We established the primary volumes via airbrush using Kimera The Red, followed by brushwork to define highlights with Vallejo Sunny Skin Tone. For deep shadows, we opted for Winsor & Newton Perylene Violet: this combination allows for highlighting and shading without using white, preventing any pinkish tones and maintaining a vivid and profound color across every model.

This intermediate phase is crucial for the transition from the uniform base to the volumetric definition of the squad. Here we show the visual gap between the pure base color and the application of progressive light gradients, achieved by mixing the primary red with Vallejo Sunny Skin Tone. Subsequently, the use of Winsor & Newton Perylene Violet allowed for deepening the shadows, giving three-dimensionality to the armor. At the same time, we proceeded with the chromatic cleanup of the black parts; although not yet detailed, their neatness is fundamental to provide visual order and help the eye correctly perceive the cleanliness and general aesthetics of the armor itself.

In this advanced phase, the focus shifts to detail definition, where every element begins to find its final placement. The power blades were executed using a Non-Metallic Metal (NMM) technique, calibrated to offer high visual impact on the battlefield. Simultaneously, we proceeded with shading the black parts, detailing the leather elements, and painting the skin tones. This final step is crucial for adding expressiveness and realism to the characters lacking helmets, elevating the character of the entire unit. The next phase will see the completion of the models, including the detailing of the base terrains, currently still in their raw state.

In this final image, we show the Blood Angels unit completed and ready for the battlefield. Every model presents all its details in place, enhanced by the choice of a dark background that maximizes the emphasis on the armor work. It is crucial to note that the vibrant red established in the initial phases has been preserved, completely avoiding shifts towards pinkish tones. This result was achieved through the strategic use of Vallejo Sunny Skin Tone in mixing, allowing for highlighting the base color without compromising its depth. The bases have also been finished, opting for a dirty and dusty setting that visually contrasts with the armor. Finally, the application of the Blood Angels decals completes the work, granting the necessary authority to the entire tactical squad.
